Following on from the successful launch at the beginning of this year of the Engine Management Systems & Dyno Tuning in Theory & Practice course, the new Advanced Engine Management System Calibration course expands on the former and provides a real depth of insight into the theory and practical applications of high-level ECU tuning.
What is the Academy of Motorsport Sciences?
The Academy aims to teach the fundamental sciences that underpin motorsport engineering related subjects, in a way that is expected to be more easily and thoroughly understood.
What subjects are covered on this new course?
Day 1 – The class room
- An introduction to the course and a run through of the subjects covered
- Fuel Science – a good look at the chemistry of using Petrol, Diesel and Alcohol fuels, and a study of the effects of the variables upon the combustion event.
- Fuel System – the theory and design of fuel delivery
- Engine damage protection – the various methods of preventing expensive damage to an engine and your to reputation!
- PWM actuator control – a detailed look at pulse width managed actuators (encompassing fuel injectors, solenoids etc) and control methods.
- PID closed loop control systems – understanding, implementing and controlling proportional/integral/derivative closed loop systems such as a “drive by wire” throttle.
- A summary of the days training followed by a question and answer session
Day 2 – The class room
- 4D mapping systems – how they work and why we use them
- Advanced dyno tuning techniques – a focus on vehicle protection
- A focus on the specific powertrain needs of a competition vehicle
- A focus on the specific powertrain needs of a road-going vehicle
- A final summary of the training followed by a question and answer session
What are the expected learning outcomes?
- Understanding fuel chemistry and delivery systems
- Understanding the theory and practice of PWM and PID actuators
- Understanding engine protection control methods and practices
- Understanding the different requirements of racing and road vehicles
- Understanding advanced engine calibration methods and practices in order to produce maximum performance safely.
